CNR-ITM
National Research Council - Institute on Membrane Technology
---
Description
The Institute on Membrane Technology (CNR-ITM, www.itm.cnr.it) is a research Institute of the National Research council of Italy (CNR, www.cnr.it ). CNR is the biggest public research organization in Italy with ca. 5000 R&D personnel staff for a total of ca. 8000 of employees.
Mission of the Institute on Membrane Technology is the research and development in the field of membrane science and engineering. The research activities aim to promote knowledge, innovation and high-level training in the field of membranes and their application in water treatment, gas separation, bioartificial organs, biotechnology, food and agriculture. The ITM is internationally recognized for its peculiar skills in the preparation of membranes (organic, inorganic, mixed matrix, biohybrid), transport phenomena, selective separations at molecular level, catalytic membranes, catalytic membrane reactors, membrane contactors (including emulsifiers and crystallizers), integrated membrane processes, membrane in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Membranes are applied in strategic sectors such as energy, environment, health, manufacturing where have achieved a leading role with a more than 20% annual growth. As part of national, Europe and international research projects, other than bilateral agreements, ITM has established collaborations with various Research Institutes, Universities and Companies located in Italy, Europe, China, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, United States, etc.
The research team involved in BioValue has more than 30 years a background in the use of membranes based on advanced functional materials for gas separation and biogas upgrading, in addition to CO2 conversion and photoconversion, hydrogen production, alkanes dehydrogenation, etc. Moreover, it has a consolidated expertise in prototype development and technological transfer of advanced membrane operations also in biogas-treatment, separation/recovery of carbon dioxide from flue gases and separation/conversion of other gas of industrial interest.

Description
Calabra Maceri e Servizi S.p.A. is one of the leading companies in the field of integrated waste management in southern Italy. Every year it receives, recycles and starts to recover, in collaboration with Italian and foreign paper mills and other processing industries of the second, Italian and foreign raw materials (steel mills, glassworks, etc.), several tons of waste of domestic origin, commercial, industrial and craft.

Description
The University of Calabria (UNICAL) is a public institution serving more than 28,000 students located in the city of Rende (CS). Research activities are currently carried out in 14 departments by more than 800 researchers and professors. The University of Calabria has extensive experience in defining and managing training and research projects at an international level, as confirmed by its participation (as a partner or coordinator) in projects funded under the EU FP7 and in projects funded in 'EU2020 (for example, the POR projects financed by the Calabria Region) and at national level (for example, PON and PRIN financed by MIUR). In addition, the University of Calabria has a technology transfer office called the liaison office - LiO - which manages the TechNest university incubator which has staff with specific skills concerning both the promotion and enhancement of research and technology transfer (patents and IPRs in general, spin off, start-up). The staff of the Environmental Engineering Department (DIAm) is involved in this research project. The DIAm carries out research and advanced training in issues relating to the environment and process engineering. As far as the BIOVALUE project is concerned, it will mainly be carried out in the MAPSET laboratory in the “Catalysis and Industrial Chemistry” section. These sections of the MAPSET Laboratory have over 400m2 of laboratories with state-of-the-art instrumentation: different X-ray analyzers, different thermogravimetric analyzers (TG-DTG-DTA-DSC), different analyzers FT_IT, UV-Vis, chemical analyzers (atomic absorption, TOC, etc.), analyzers with GC-MS technology, GCxGC, equipment for adsorption-desorption measurements, measurement of specific surface area, systems for evaluating catalytic activity (multireactors for liquid and gas phase).

Description
The research activity is conducted within order activities as contractual research and also through grants and collaborative projects. Research and development is focused on membrane processes propelled by the electric field and pressure difference. The focus of research activities on industrial research with the objective of obtaining new products (membranes, modules, devices), SW and technologies. These activities are controlled through projects and performed in the form of grant research, supporting basic research (on a limited scale only) or mainly in the form of collaborative project research in cooperation with industrial partners, subsidized by the Czech Republic or European Union. Through this activity, we create know-how and applied research results, which we subsequently commercialize by the process of transferring them to our partners and customers pursuant to the contractual rules of the subsidy provider or by means of our own offer portfolio within the commercial activity of the company.
The research activity is divided into three research programmes to secure faster transfer of the results of the centre’s research and development activities into real industrial applications and it is focused on membrane materials with further links to devices up to their technological applications.
